Vision, mission, values and goals are elements that collectively build an organization's "Picture." The Walker Company works with clients to determine which of the elements are relevant to their organization.
The elements shown in this diagram are not the only ones that might make up an organization's strategic picture. For example, some organizations may prefer guiding principles in place of vision and/or mission.
Essential Work, a unique element of the Strategic Picture created by The Walker Company, is a high-level view of the work the organization exists to do. It is the missing link that drives every other aspect of the business or organization, including the organization chart. The Essential Work provides a complete view of an organization’s "operational landscape." Using the Essential Work information, clients identify areas where change and/or innovation are critically needed. As new questions arise about priorities, or a new direction, the ideas are explored in relationship to the Essential Work.
The Walker Company has developed this strategic planning model to facilitate moving from strategy to operations. Many organizations do not have a cohesive understanding of the work required to carry out their strategic direction. Consequently, they are unable to succinctly communicate this information to each other, their partners, clients and customers. Building a Strategic Picture that is understood, accepted and supported by major stakeholders sets the stage for tactical, operational success.
